Sr. San Miguel had sold his participation in the Credit
Information Bureau recently and was interested in devoting
himself to the establishment of a sustainable program that would
bring help to poor families for their economic self-sufficience.
In April of 2005, after extensive Market studies, recruiting and
training of the necessary personnel, FSMA opened its doors to
the poor of the rural sector of San Cristóbal Province. By the
middle of September, 2005, the foundation was serving more than
1,400 women with small loans that averaged out about US$200 for
micro-business development. The active portfolio of the
foundation at the end of 2005 was of about US$300,000 and the
members kept compensations of capital in the order of about
US$20,000 in capital formatioin. All the members had been chosen
with a "Poverty Measuring tool" in the Grameen methodolgy style,
to make sure that they belonged to families representative of
the poorest of the poor in their respective communities.
The business plan over 5 years for San Miguel Foundation plans
to reach some 18,000 members for beginnings of 2010 and
operational self sufficiency by mid 2009. In this initial phase
of the organization, it's been financed by the founder's
investments, and now President of the Board of Directors; but in
the course of the next five years it is seeking to finance
itself acceding local and international funds in the order of US
$ 2.5 million. Over 90% of these funds will go directly to
finance the foundation's loan portfolio.
